Explore Nature and Celebrate Purple Martins!

The Explore Nature event will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2020, 9:00 am-1:00 p.m. at North Park located on the corner of Lockhart and Eden Church Road in Denham Springs, LA.  Event will be located in the middle of the park next to the walking trail. Admission is FREE.

Explore Nature is an outdoor educational event and is sure to be fun for everyone.  Many groups will be on hand to provide information and activities centered around nature. There will be children’s activities and face painting to make this event fun for all ages.  Kids should make sure to stop by the Bookmobile first to pick up their scavenger hunt paper.  A surprise will be given to those that visit all the booths!

This event will highlight the thriving Purple Martin colony at North Park.  With May being peak nesting time, these native birds will be on full display for all to see.  Krista Adams, a certified Master Naturalist, will be on hand to share information and helpful tips of being a successful Purple Martin landlord.

Audubon Louisiana, state office of the National Audubon Society, will share information on bird banding and how it’s one of the most important techniques used for studying and identifying individual birds. They’ll also demonstrate how to make nest boxes for other bird species, such as the Prothonotary Warblers, that readily use man made nest boxes.

Denham Springs Garden Club will provide free bird seed at their booth and gardening information.

Livingston Parish Master Gardener will share information about native gardening and will provide tips on creating the ultimate backyard wildlife habitat.

Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater Baton Rouge will present information on birds and will have bird photography on display.  In addition, they will have information about the LMNGBR program.

Capital Area Beekeepers Association will provide information on the honeybee and explain how they play a crucial part in our world.  Make sure to stop by and see their contained “observation hive” in action.  Several types of honey will be available for tasting.

Livingston Parish Library will bring the library to this event! Their Bookmobile will be parked onsite full of nature inspired books for all to view.  Library card holders will be able to check out books too.  If Livingston parish residents do not have a library card, they can get one at this time.  This is where the scavenger hunt begins!

Live Oak High School’s Environmental Club recently participated in the Louisiana Envirothon at LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens. They placed first in the Soils Category and first place in the Wildlife category.  The club will provide free face painting and temporary tattoos.

Joining the event for this first time this year is Wings of Hope Wildlife Sanctuary.  Come meet Harriet the Harris’s Hawk, Archie the Screech Owl, and other resident birds that live at Wings of Hope.

Student artwork will be on display from two local elementary schools. LOHS Environmental Club will be showcasing their art talents by providing free face painting and other kid friendly activities.

A sponsor of Purple Martin housing to our local schools, Tractor Supply, will have volunteers on hand to make sure everyone stays hydrated by providing bottled water during our event.

We hope you’ll join us and explore nature and its beauty!
